Amidst the upsurge of Lassa fever in some states in Nigeria, the Rivers State Government has assured it’s citizens that there is no cause for alarm.
Speaking on the State’s level of preparedness to combat the menace,the Director Research and Planning in the State Ministry of Health, Chinwe Atata said there is no confirm case of Lassa fever in Rivers State.
She however said that 67 persons have been placed under surveillance and all State Infections and Treatment Teams are at alert for any eventuality.
Atata also said that all medical personnel have been advised to observe precautionary measures in handling patients, especially those with viral fever cases. “For instance,the use of gloves,masks and son on should not be compromised,” she stressed.
The Director said that there is sufficient theraputic and preventive drugs in the State to tackle possible Lassa fever attack.
She advised all medical personnel to maintain standard simple trials for treatment cases.
“There is no confirmed case of Lassa fever in Rivers State. There was however a reported case of one Resident of Rivers State who was diagnosed and treated at Iruah Specialist Hospital in Edo State. She later passed on and the case is being investigated.
So far 57 persons have been placed under surveillance in Rivers State. The State Infections,Collation and Treatment Teams are at alert for any eventuality. All reported cases of Lassa fever are still being investigated, so remained unconfirmed,” Atata explained.
Lassa fever outbreak has been reported in many states of the federation,with several deaths recorded.
