As the race towards the 2018 general elections heats up, so also are the aspirants’ desperation to occupy the various elective positions from the numerous political parties, major, minor or irrelevant gathers momentum.

In Delta State, as in the other states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, politicians of all manner springs forth to vie for the vacant political offices whether or not they possess the requisite qualification, experience and financial muscle.

For this contest, it is pertinent to state that some aspirants are purely posters/bill boards based and not really intending to contest but merely out to constitute a clog in the genuine political ambition of their supposed foes to ensure they do not secure their party ticket to run the race. Some others are money bags out to let the gullible public know they have the raw cash to spend to even when they know they cannot sail through the rough and murky political turf. While yet some others are professional politicians whose only visible means of livelihood is politicking, and in this business they have acquired so much ill-gotten wealth that they can match the political neophytes with so money cash for cash,  thugs for thugs and blood for blood.

In this piece, i shall concern myself only with the race to the Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State as it affects the four Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, aspirants viz: Hon. Daniel Reyenieju, Hon. Dan Mayuku, Commissioner Omamofe Pira and Chief Thomas Ereyitomi respectively. I shall take on aspirants from the other parties in subsequent articles.

For those who may not have known this, let me start by alerting you all that these four eminently qualified aspirants are blood brothers from the Ugborodo, Escravos axis of Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State and are financially buoyant and capable to go the whole hog to compete for the coveted seat at the Green Chamber at Abuja.

In the same vein, they are all young, very vibrant, widely travelled and grounded in the politics of Warri, the bedrock and cornerstone of Delta politics with various inter-connective links with the ethnic nationalities that make up the Warri Federal Constituency comprising the Itsekiris, Ijaws and Urhobos of Warri and beyond.

The big question now is: If they all possess these qualities and from one home source, why not go into political negotiation for one to step down for the other? According to one school of thought, they know what they are doing and are merely playing on our collective sensibilities while another school of thought believe that it is a show or exhibition of sphere of influence or popularity and who has the required and necessary national political connection in our political landscape in the state and Abuja to clinch the party ticket?

Whatever is their joker for the race to the House of Representatives to represent the good people of Warri Federal Constituency, one must be quick to take a cursory look at these Itsekiri politicians for what they are to enable to delegates select who the cap fits for position.

HON. DAN REYENIEJU

A charisma personality with a high sense of taciturnity, extremely intelligence and diplomatic in nature, he is a business magnet and an astute politician of no mean integrity.

He is a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chieftain and a third term member of the House of Representatives and still willing to serve the people for a further fourth term come 2019. A graduate and politician playing politics at the highest level at Abuja, rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty currently. He has a three term legislative experience of lawmaking at the Green Chambers to his credit and has so many people employed in his companies and provides various kind of empowerment to persons in the Warri Federal Constituency. He is a no nonsense person and very meticulous. It is common knowledge that the longer you have stayed in the House the respect you command in comparison to a neophyte. He therefore has legislative leverage to his advantage in the race to the Green Chamber.

HON. DAN MAYUKU

A legal practitioner par excellence. A man of the people representing the good people of Warri South-West Constituency in the delta State House of Assembly since the good days of Chief James Ibori as Governor of the state. He has decided that come 2019, having garner so much legislative experience as a law maker at that level decided to aim higher to Abuja to showcase his legislative prowess.

Highly flamboyantly amiable, sociable, lovable and generous to a fault. His generosity transcends tribes and political affiliation, he is a news maker any time. Popular opinion have it that he has served creditably well and deserves to go higher to give more effective representation to the people of Warri Federal Constituency. Ran an open door policy as a state legislator at Asaba and promise to continue and bring all his legislative experience to bear by attracting more Federal presence to Warri. He has become a master of the act of lobbying to get what he wants for the betterment of his people. He said he decided to leave the level for his subordinates to be able to take a political leap from where he started from having learnt from him for some years. His youths and women empowerment programmes are legendary. He has held various sensitive government positions in the state and the House of Assembly till date.

HON. OMAMOFE PIRA

With a natural one-inch stretch of grey hair trade mark on his head, he is currently the Commissioner for oil and gas in the State as he was during the Governor Uduaghan administration tending to oil and gas and environment matter. A key political player in the politics of Warri, he own a multi -million naira business outfit running at the Escravos Tank Farm, employing hundreds of youths and empowering several persons irrespective of tribe, religion and political affiliation.

He is very sociable, frank and truthful. His words are his bond. He is also a highly detribalized Nigerian with the pains of the neglected Niger Delta region at heart. Currently manages a formidable political structure capable of intimidating his rivals and alleged to be running for the coveted seat to prove a point to doubting some Thomases for not keeping to their words of agreement. A staunch defender of the rights of his deprived and neglected oil-rich Ugborodo community. He was the Chairman of the Chevron created Itsekiri Regional Development Council, IRDC, in charge of multi-billion naira contracts and projects for the development of oil and gas bearing Itsekiri communities of Delta state.

CHIEF THOMAS EREYITOMI

The Commissioner representing the Itsekiri Ethnic Nationality in DESOPADEC is a political king maker who stated that it is now his turn to reap from his sweat haven being the big masquerade behind the political ascension of countless politicians in the state for many years. He is a financial pillar and backbone of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State.

Stupendously wealthy with multi-billion naira oil and gas facilities employing thousands of Nigerians in the high seas and the Chevron Tank Farm, his philanthropic gesture looms larger than life as it cuts across all strata of persons in the country. Extremely popular in the business world, Chief Ereyitomi has been an astute community leader with many years of experience in complex community politics. Has been an adept in the management of crisis and human relations matters.

A first timer in the field of contesting party elections in politics, he has to his credit the goodwill of his past deeds in the society having touched the lives of many who even did not know him. He is reputed to have said that he is going there to bring more democracy dividends to Warri Federal Constituency by way of attracting businesses and companies to the area to create more employment, ensure sustained peace and unity among all the tribes in Warri.

Truly, the delegates to the PDP primaries and the party leadership are certain to have a hectic time choosing the best of these eminent personalities as they are sure to make as much cash as are made available and smile to the banks while the chosen standard bearer of the PDP goes home with joy and the others defects to other political parties as this is the season of crossing carpeting for petty reasons of selfishness and stomach infrastructure above party supremacy.
