Pandemonium and anxiety pervaded the university community of Oye Ekiti as the peaceful protest by the students of the Federal University turned bloody, leading to the death of one person.

The protest, which began on Tuesday, was reportedly hijacked by some hoodlums that attempted to attack the wife of Ekiti state Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi.

 

Erelu Fayemi was on tour of Oye local government when the incident happened.

 

A security detail on her entourage was said to have opened fire on the rampaging students as they surged to attack the governor’s wife.

 

Meanwhile, in a statement last night, the authority of the institution announced an indefinite closure of the university.

 

A statement personally signed by the vice Chancellor, Prof Soremekun, advised the students to vacate the campus latest by 10.00 am today.(Wednesday)

 

He also announced the suspension of the students union government.

 

In a reaction, the Nigeria Police Force, Ekiti State Command   debunked the story that the police shot at protesting students of Federal University Oye Ekiti State.

 

The  command described the report as baseless, unfounded and only intends to incite and create panic in the minds of peace loving people of Ekiti State and the general public.

 

Signed by the spokesman of the command,  DSP Caleb Ikechukwu, it states that “the students of Federal University Oye/Ikole Campus led by their students Union Government simultaneously embarked on a protest against the total blackout in both campuses.

 

“The protesting students took to the Federal Highway away from the perimeter wall of University and blocked the Oye-Ikole-Lokoja Federal roads, thereby causing the breach of peace and grid lock to motorists plying that route.

 

“The protesting students also invaded the office of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in Oye Ekiti.

 

“It took the quick intervention of policemen deployed to the scene to prevent further damage of the office complex.

 

“The Police Officers at the scene pacified  the protesting students, removed the blockade and dispersed them  peacefully.

 

“However, the protesting students turned around in their numbers and took their plight to Her Excellence, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, the Wife of the Executive Governor of Ekiti State, who was at an empowerment programme.

 

“The protesting Students suddenly became unruly, hostile and took laws into their hands, also vandalized the motorcade of Her excellency.

 

“The protesting students did not stop at that, they also assaulted the policemen who where at the scene to maintain law and order and damaged Police Vehicle

found at the Scene.

Investigation is ongoing to bring the perpetrators to book.
