President of the One Love Foundation, Patrick Osagie Eholor, has hammered on the need for the Nigeria Police to be reformed in line with what is obtainable across the western world.
He asserted that the government must do more for the police in line with the provision in the constitution that life and security are paramount issues but which Nigerians have never enjoyed.
He promised to forward a petition to President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police on the way forward.
Eholor lamented that the police apart from poor remuneration are not well trained and also lack basic tools needed for crime fighting like boots, uniforms, sophisticated weapons, patrol vehicles etc.
“If we are asking the police to protect and guard us they must have adequate training. Before you can give police a gun in western countries they must have gone through proper training.”
He advocated for state police, “that’s why we need state police. We can still have federal police just as we have the FBI(Federal Bureau of Investigation) in America and we also have the Metropolitan Police that police the people.”
On security votes, Eholor challenged Nigerians to always make enquiries on how the state governors spend the money budgeted for security votes.
On the numerous roadblocks mounted by the police, Eholor stated: “Whenever a new Inspector General of Police (IGP) assumes office he will proclaim that police roadblocks has been disbanded but a few days later they will be back at roadblocks.
“They have to hustle to buy petrol(to fill the tank of their patrol vehicle). They have to hustle to buy their bullet. They transfer their aggression to the citizens.
