Pandemonium as people of Choba community in Ikwere LGA of Rivers State were thrown into shock as gunmen attacked the community, leaving two persons shot dead, others left with bullet wounds.
The attack, made several persons fled the community . The community development chairman, Lawrence Igwe and the compound Chief Oriji Azu of the community were shot dead.
Arc Nwodu was shot and others are receiving treatment in undisclosed hospital who sustained various degree of bullet wounds.
Residents told Daily Watch that distress calls were made to the police for rescue. But said the police disappointed them with no response during their distress call.
Meanwhile, the police in the community have defended their action of poor arms and ammunition, including sound patrol vans. Although, their defense was gritted with heavy condemnation and sharp backlash for failing on their responsibility.
The shooting according to eyewitnesses took place for more than hours, leaving the neighboring communities in Alakahia, Rumuosi, and Rumuokini in great panic as residents as they fled into near by bush for safety.
Police spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoli insisted that the police swung into action immediately the distress call was received from the community under attack by the gunmen.
The police also said investigation is going to unravel those behind the attack and the killing of the CDC chairman Lawrence Igwe and the compound chief Oriji Azu.
Community spokesperson Nnamdi Omoli also called on the Choba residence to increase their partnership with the police in other to prevent the repeat of any attack in the community.
However, Paramount Ruler of Choba community, Eze Raymond Aokocha has urged security agents to ensure proper investigation to the killing of Lawrence Igwe and Oriji Azu of the community.
The monarch also tasked the security agents to carryout intense investigation and arrest of the culprits, noting that the killings were assassination.
He however advised the residents in Choba community to give useful information to the security operatives that will help in the investigation.
