Oshiomhole, Obaseki standoff: The untold story

Adams Oshiomhole and Godwin Obaseki

By Marvelous Oseyomon , Benin

The push and pull between Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Mr. Godwin Obaseki, the former, and present governors of Edo state, respectively, is no longer news. What is however news, are the underlying reasons behind the impasse that has torn a once inseparable allies apart.

It has been revealed that the hidden masquerade between the above

personalities is the Deputy Governor of Edo state, Hon. Philip Shuaibu who has sown a deep rooted seed of discord between Obaseki and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Shuaibu, who was one of the right hand men of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole even before Oshiomhole became the governor of Edo state, and was also a member of Oshiomhole’s kitchen cabinet, became consumed in his ambition to become a political leader in Edo state, rather than being

a follower of his master, Comrade Oshiomhole. It could be recalled

that, it was Comrade Adams Oshiomhole that projected and supported Shuaibu to become a member, Edo state House of Assembly, EDHA, and eventually the Majority Leader of the House. Oshiomhole made Shuaibu a House of Representatives Member to represent Etsako Federal constituency, and before the end of Philips tenure, Oshiomhole single handedly brought him to be the Deputy to Governor Obaseki.

Philip Shuaibu’s plan, was to erode the leadership role of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole  in Edo state and take over as the leader; he therefore started by turning all Oshiomhole’s loyalists against him.

First, he got Mr. Godwin Obaseki, Edo state governor, who Oshiomhole also

projected to APC leaders and Edo people, Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, the

former Speaker, EDHA, and a handful of others to his side to achieve

his aim. At some point, during the State Executive Council, SEC,

meetings, Philip Shuaibu would caution those present to desist from

talking about Oshiomhole’s achievements as a governor in Edo state, as

his tenure is over. Rather, they should be singing the praises of

Godwin Obaseki. Shuaibu, and Obaseki went beyond this to recruit even some Peoples Democratic, PDP, in and outside Edo state to achieve

their aim, not leaving out some APC governors and other APC personalities that may be averse to Oshiomhole’s position as National Chairman of APC, including Chief John Oyegun, the former APC national

leader. In all of these, Oshiomhole, in spite of the fact that he was

fully aware of their plot, kept his cool.

The visits made by Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, Chief Tom Ikimi, both PDP

chieftains, Pastor Ize Iyamu, a onetime PDP gubernatorial aspirant in

Edo state, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state, and a host of others are

good examples, while the APC leaders in Edo state that are seen as not

loyal to them, like Chief Francis Inegbeniki, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror,

a former Speaker, EDHA, and the preferred choice for the Speakership

position of the 7th Assembly, Rt. Hon Samson Osagie, Barr. Idahagbon, former Edo state Commissioner for Justice, who all worked assiduously

to campaign and canvass for votes for them to emerge as governor and

deputy, were given bad names.

Thugs, the Police, operatives of the DSS were used to oppress and suppress them.

The quest for power and supremacy of Philip Shuaibu and Obaseki became worse than that of Idi Amin of Uganda.

In view of the foregoing, one may now ask: ‘why the inordinate quest

for power by Shuaibu and Obaseki’? These Edo cabals are on a mission

to subdue the Edo people, plunder the commonwealth of Edo people and

turn themselves to mini gods. Otherwise, what other reason/s can one

give for the passage of the electricity theft bill by EDHA during the

tenure of Kabiru Adjoto as Speaker, EDHA, while completely undermining the pains of the people that pay for electricity they never consumed, if

not to protect the interest of Governor Godwin Obaseki who has mapped

out plans to buy over Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC? What reason can one give for the imposition of a Speaker on EDHA if not to ensure that such bills that have been passed are not repelled, in spite of the protest by Edo people? Why was an Assembly inaugurated dead in the night, under tight security and nineteen members, out of twenty four locked out?  Why were four members out of the nineteen kidnapped, and forced to join only five that were on Obaseki’s side?

Again, when Kabiru Adjoto was the Speaker, EDHA, he and his cohorts, namely Hon. Osamudiamen Asoro, Hon. Osaigbove Iyoha, were said to have

sold items belonging to EDHA including heavy duty generators to themselves, and embarked on massive employment of staff, without following the due process; in spite of the fact that EDHA is said to

be overstaffed. Several staff allowances and impress were stopped,

etc. Little wonder that the staff jubilated and celebrated the exit of Adjoto from EDHA.

Again, what is Obaseki and Shuaibu’s involvement in all of

these? With the imposition of Okiye as the Speaker, the Deputy Clerk of the House, Mr. Efezokhai Samuel, has been asked to go on compulsory retirement, the quarter master of the Legislators quarters, Mr. Rasaq Lawal has been

issued queries, and is being investigated, all because of the fact that they are perceived as

those that almost impeded their kangaroo inauguration. Edo people are watching as Obaseki continue in his macabre dance.
