This followed reported cases of flooding across the state.

Speaking at plenary,  the lawmakers made reference to the flooding in Akungba in which a 400 level student of the Adekunle Ajasin University got drowned.

The lawmakers, while empathising with the parents of the deceased student, the University and Akungba community, blamed the incident on obstruction of drainages and the waterways.

They called on people to stop dropping refuse in waterways and stop erecting  buldings in water channels to prevent flooding.

Reference was equally made to other disasters caused by flooding in other parts of the state especially an aged woman caught in the web of the flood and later died because of the complications.

They called on relevant agencies to rise to the  challenges of saving lives and property whenever such disasters occur.

Consequent upon this, Majority leader of the House, Mr Sulaimon Maito moved a motion and was seconded by Mr Akinribido that the Ministry of Environment should be invited to explain its efforts at tackling flooding across the state.

The Speaker , Rt. Honourable  Bamidele Oleyelogun commiserated with the parents of the deceased student of Adekunle Ajasin University, who got drowned in the Akungba flooding.

He raised a team of lawmakers to visit the parents of the deceased student,  as well as the University community to express the condolences of members on the sad incident.

The Speaker equally called on residents to stop building houses on waterways while dumping of refuse in drainages should stop henceforth.

Meanwhile, the state government, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on media, Mr Ojo Oyewamide, stated that “it is with a heavy heart that the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, receives the news of the death of Doyinsola Motunrayo Boluwaji in the flash floods that ravaged parts of Akungba Akoko.

“Reports gathered from competent sources had intimated Mr Governor that Doyin, until her untimely demise, was a 400 level student of the Adekunle Ajasin University. The Governor finds this incident unfortunate especially the saddest aspect that the victim was in her prime, preparing to graduate from the University.

“Governor Akeredolu conveys his deep condolences to the parents and family of the deceased. He equally shares the pains of this moment with the entire Students’ Body and indeed, the University Community. Mr Governor rues this sad development.”
