Praises have been pouring in for the late Hajia Maimuna Umoru. Infact, the deluge is nothing compared to the depth of emotions shown by those whose path the late Umoru crossed or whose lives she touched.
‘’When the news of Mama’s death was broken to us, we knew that she had lived her full circle. At 102, at this age and time when life expectancy in Nigeria stands at a ridiculous age 54, clocking 102 years on mother earth would not have been possible without God’s abiding grace and candour. Mama, as she was fondly called by those of us younger generations of the Afegbua Royal Family, was an epitome of kindness, good neighborliness, generosity and love for mankind’’ Former Edo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Kassim Afegbua said.
‘’I could recollect very vividly when some of us paid her a courtesy visit on June 9, 2018 to share fond memories with her as part of a larger annual remembrance of our monarch, His Royal Majesty, Alhaji Abdulmalik Afegbua, the Otaru and Ekhaifome 1 of Okpella, she still exuded the great feeling of being alive and took us down memory lane about life in those good old days. I couldn’t draw the line that Mama was already above 100 years. She was still able to recollect some of us even though we belong to the middle age within the family. Her sense of recollection was profound and quite amazing for a woman of her age’’ Afegbua said in a statement Saturday in Abuja.
Hajia Umoru died on May 16, 2019. 40thday Fidau prayer will hold on Saturday, July 6, 2019 by 8; 30am at the Afegbua Royal Palace, Awuyemi, Okpella.
Of Hajia Umoru, Kassim Afegbua said ‘’She represented unique persona whose sense of philanthropy was remarkable’’
‘’Like every mortal, we all shall taste death, but to die peacefully is what everyone aspires for in life. Mama is blessed with responsible children who took proper care of her and made sure she never lacked anything. She was tendered like a baby, clothed like a pageant that she was, and celebrated like an icon. She represented unique persona whose sense of philanthropy was remarkable. She had a heart of gold; a heart that cares for the other; a heart that reaches out to her neighbours; a heart that recognizes generosity and fear of Allah’’.
He urged members of the family to celebrate Hajia Umoru.
‘’As a devout Muslim, she knew quite alright the ephemerality of life, our temporary residence. No doubt, Mama is surely resting among the saints in the hereafter. This is why it is incumbent upon us to celebrate her, instead of mourning. At 102 years before she departed from this sinful world, we pray Allah, the Omniscient to grant her Aljanat Firdaus. Amen.
‘’To the wonderful children she left behind, may they enjoy the care and nurture of their own children, the same way they catered for Mama, until we meet to part no more’’ he added..
Tributes, of course have continued to be showered on Hajia Umoru, as those who knew her lamented her demise.
‘’It is a known fact that the people of Okpella community are going to feel the absence of Mama, but I pray Almighty Allah give the family she left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable lost till eternity where we will all meet to part no more and grant her the best place in Aljanah’’ Hon (ALH) Aremiyau Aligamhe Momoh, Executive Chairman, Etsako Local Government said.
