Join active Politics, NLC tells workers

By Ebiowei Lawal

YENAGOA-The leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bayelsa state has called on Workers under it umbrella to join active politics to ensure their desired chance for Nigeria.

The Bayelsa state chairman of the NLC, Comrade John Ndiomu stated this while speaking with newsmen during the 40th anniversary is the Union in Yenagoa.

He said it has become pertinent for workers to get involved in politics because NLC is not just the voice of workers but the voice of the people.

“NLC has not only raised the living standard of workers but it has worked hard to ensure a Nigeria Nation that would be just, democratic, transparent and prosperous.

“The working class must be involved in politics to ensure that elections are free and fair and in this regard every civil servant, pensioners and their wards must register with INEC and get their PVC.” He added

Delivering a paper titled ‘The Role of Labour in the Development of Bayelsa State’ Comrade Felix Odubo said that the belief over the years is that the only responsible of labour is to mobilize the people against bad government and promote welfare of workers.

The ultimate goal of NLC he said is to mobilize the people towards participation in governance and that if this is properly carried out by labour it would lead to good governance.

In his paper ‘Nigeria Labour Congress Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow‘ Dr. Socrates Ebo said to ensure a safe future for Bayelsa state, then the future of NLC must be jealously safe guarded.

He said the future of NLC must exist in a state where labour unions are not fated to protest alone to compel government to reverse bad government policies.

“How about taking control of the machinery of policy formulation? In advanced democracies, the organized labour always has political platform through which they push their interests and shape government policies.

” What has become of the Nigeria Labour Party that the NLC helped to form? The NLC must look beyond protest and think productively. Labour must take active participation in the formation of governments, bureaucratic neutrality notwithstanding. ” He averred.
