Marxist Kola Edokpayi in this exclusive interview with ISAAC OLAMIKAN threatened mass protest against the Edo State Government on the issue of the abandoned ultramodern New Era College building in Benin City.

Excerpts:

Recently, you did a short video(now trending) on the ultramodern building at New Era College, Benin, constructed by the former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, to replace the dilapidated building housing the school but which has not been put to use by the state government yet.

We are stakeholders in the state and we believe in the judicious use of tax payers’ money. You are aware that the previous administration led by Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, built a structure at New Era College, Benin, putting into perspective the deplorable state of the classrooms at the school. The structure was built to assuage the plight of the children of plebeians, the children of the poor, that attend government schools.

The building was commissioned by the president of the federal republic of Nigeria, President, Muhammadu Buhari, on November 7th, 2016. We were very ecstatic when the president came all the way from Abuja to commission the project. But we visited the school last week and to our greatest astonishment we discovered that the building is not put into use to the extent that we saw indian hemp(marijuana)smokers smoking around the building and grasses have taken over some part of it. It was tax payers’ money that was used to build the school building. The school was named after the two times governor of the defunct Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, who was from Edo South.

But I was so surprised that a project that was named after a great man, to immortalised him, is lying fallow. We have issued a seven days ultimatum to Governor Godwin Obaseki to open the school so that our students can learn in a befitting classroom to nip in the bud any kind of psychological inferiority complex.

The ultimatum has since expired and we are strategizing on how to lead a peaceful protest first to the office of the commissioner for education to ask questions about why the gigantic building with air-conditioners and other modern educational materials is still lying fallow while the students are learning under the most deplorable conditions and environment.

If the abandonment of the building is due to the infighting between the godson(Obaseki) and his godfather(Oshiomhole) then they should find a way of resolving their differences and ensure that it does not affect the process of governance.
