Ijaw nation cuts across Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo and Ondo state converged today at the formal launching of the Liberator Newspaper in Warri, Delta state with huge success as guests overflowed the venue.
Professor Benjamin Okaba the guest lecturer at the event on the theme ‘‘ Echoes of the Niger Delta Emancipation, media and the Liberator example’’ said, the Ijaw nation has been balkanized, oppressed and subjugated by successive administrations in Nigeria visa-vis with multinationals from historical time till date.
According to him, a media house being run by an Ijaw son is a welcomed development as Ijaws will be in a right direction to tell their own story, rather than allowing strangers telling the world fake stories about the Ijaw nation.
He noted that despite the environmental degradation, resulting from oil pollution, the Nigeria media abandoned the poor suffering people and their communities and concentrate on bomb blast of oil pipeline, violence perpetrated by aggrieved youths as protest against injustice from the region as their major news of the day as well as create banner headlines in both national and international news, blackmailing the genuine agitators.
‘‘ Nobody reports the plight and suffering of the Ijaw people. The people who produced over 85% of the national economy have no health center, no good school, no motorable road, no clean drinking water and so on. I urge Ijaw nation to support this vision by giving every form of encouragement to the young publisher who has made us proud to succeed telling our story in way best to us’’ he said.
The publisher of the Liberator, Amb. Princewill Binebai in his welcome address had thanked all guests present at the launching. He said ‘‘ The Liberator Newspaper will become a voice of the oppressed in the world. The vision behind this media house is to become a global Newspaper owned by a Niger Delta. The core purpose of The Liberator is to enhance society by creating collecting and distributing high quality news and information’’ he assured.
The occasion was attended by royal fathers, top politicians, including member representing Burutu federal constituency at the federal house of assembly. Rt. Hon. Julius Pondi, Hon. Asupa Forteta, member representing Burutu North constituency in Delta state House of assembly and other dignitaries.
