WARRI-The President Muhammad Buhari led Federal Government today commissioned the Phase II Remediation in Oil Impacted sites around Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company and handed it over to host communities in Delta State.
In a keynote address, the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Environment, Ibrahim Usman stated that the Phase I of the project was awarded in 2009 by the Dr. Goodluck administration stressing that it completed in April 2010.
The Minister noted that the President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government decides to implement the Phase II of the remediation work in other not to jeopardize the success of the Phase I and also to improve the general well-being of the impacted communities.
“This gesture underscores the present administration’s determination to continue with the implementation of all genuine Government Policies, agreements and contracts at both National and international levels entered into by the previous administration which is laying a solid foundation to our quest for virile and prosperous nation on the path of unfettered development.
Usman who described the commissioning and hand over of the project as” laudable” also expressed the belief that the successful completion of the project will improve the living standards of the people around the communities as well as their surroundings.
According to Usman,”This would equally go a long way in mitigating the impacts of associated oil pollution that had been experienced by the 27 impacted communities in recent times.
“At this critical moment of our nation building and economic recovery, this project will also provide ample opportunities to the communities as well as promote socioeconomic development and well-being of the citizens.”
The Minister thanked the Secretary’ to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustafa, the Ecological Fund Office,EFO, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Project Contractor, Messrs Andelsta Limited as well as the Project Consultant, Messers Envap Consultancy Services Limited for their.doggedness in ensuring timely and speedy completion of the project.
He also implored the communities to cherish the laudable project saying,”On behalf of the Federal Government, I hereby formally commission and hand over the project to the communities and Delta State Government.
In an address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ecological Fund Office, the Presidency Abuja, Dr. Habiba.M. Lawal noted that the project was initiated as part of the Presidential Intervention Programmes for the impacted Communities in the Niger Delta.
