Facebook has put in place automated systems powered by artificial intelligence with the capacity to detect foreign manipulation campaigns on the company’s global platform of 2.4 billion monthly users which is looking to counter and anticipate interference in the United States in the 2020 election.

The company made the announcement on Monday, October 21. This is in a bid to prevent a future occurrence of any form of election manipulation. Recall that in 2016 the U.S. election was said to have witnessed a Russian manipulation campaign which was allowed to operate unchecked.

Mark Zuckerberg said with its 35,000 personnel working on security issues the company has come to embrace the responsibility of preventing foreign manipulation campaigns on its platform.

“There are a lot of effects. Obviously, one of the bad ones is nation-states trying to interfere in our democracy. And that’s one that we need to push back on.” Zuckerberg said.

Reacting to the many criticisms about Facebook not giving everyone fair chance especially political actors. Zuckerberg noted “We operate in a lot of different places, you know, I’m running a company where I’m trying to make sure that we can give everyone a voice.”
