The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has ordered the immediate suspension of Mr Walton Liverpool as the Executive Secretary of the state Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) over illegal award of contracts and alleged misappropriation of funds.
Mr.Monday Bubou Obolo,member representing Southern Ijaw constituency 2 and leader of the House moved the motion on matter of urgent public importance during the plenary on Wednesday.
Mr Obolo said the SUBEB executive secretary runs the board like a his private business where contracts are allegedly awarded, and board members were constantly keep on the dark, without distribution of projects to schools in the state.
The House also invite Hon. commissioner for education, Mr Jonathan Obuebite, chairman and director of projects in SUBEB as well as members of the state tender board to appear before a special house committee headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr Abraham Ngobere for more explanation on the contracts awarded by the suspended executive secretary.
Meanwhile, the house has invited an acting executive secretary of the board, Mr Pius Jonah to appear before the next plenary of the house for screening and confirmation.
However,the suspension of Dickson’s in-law Mr.Walton Liverpool has generated mixed reactions on social media.
Mr.Raphael Ojo a social media commentator on his Twitter handle alleged that,the suspension might be connected to misappropriation of funds, delays of teachers salaries, demotion of teachers and poor welfare packages for teachers.
According to Raphael”Very correct. Teachers are seriously suffering. No promotion, no implementation of promotion, no teaching Aids, delay in salary payment, outstanding 4 and half months unpaid Arrears, outstanding 18% minimum wage Arrears, no impress to headmasters and teachers posted to the rural Areas, no teachers office chair and table etc. No motivation to teachers. Why will they not suspend him.”
The suspended executive secretary of UBEB marries to one of the sisters to Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state, he had been the UBEB boss since 2012 when Dickson assumed office as the governor of the state.
