The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) visited Burutu Local Government headquarters in Delta State on January 28, 2025, ahead of the upcoming voter registration exercise.
The visit, led by the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Delta State, Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren, who was warmly received by the Executive Chairman of Burutu Local Government, Dr. Julius Takeme. According to Mr. Umoren, Burutu was the 24th Local government in Delta State that INEC had visited as part of its ongoing tour across the 25 local governments Areas in the State.
During the visit, Mr. Umoren appealed to the Local Government leaders and traditional rulers to help mobilize and raise awareness about the voters registration processes and importance. He emphasized that INEC would employ jingles, posters, and public announcements to encourage widespread participation.
In response, Dr. Takeme expressed his appreciation for INEC’s visit and assured the Commission that mobilizing the community would not be an issue. He pledged that Burutu would launch a comprehensive awareness campaign to ensure all eligible voters were registered. However, he also pointed out a unique challenge for Burutu, noting that 80% of the area is riverine and that it was not connected by road to other parts of the State. Takeme requested that INEC consider this geographical challenges when distributing voter registration machines and officials, suggesting that, due to the area’s size and terrain, Burutu should be allocated additional machines to ensure sufficient coverage.
The Pere of Iduwini Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Bosu Dio (JP), also addressed the gathering, thanking INEC for visiting his kingdom. He assured the Commission that he would mobilize his people to take advantage of the voter registration opportunity.
The meeting was attended by key leaders, including Rt. Hon. Julius Pondi, the member representing Burutu Federal Constituency, and Chief (Mrs.) Georgina Evah, Vice Chairman of Burutu Local Government, Councillors, supervisors, aides a d other community leaders.
