Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (CHURAC) has thrown its weight behind the proposed peaceful protest by the oil bearing Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West LGA, Delta state against the federal government on multiple complains of neglect and marginalization.
CHURAC publicity secretary Mr. Oyinkedi Fuofegha disclosed the group position stated that ”The plan by the people of the GBARAMATU Kingdom to peacefully protest against oil companies operating in their terrains is not out of place. They’re constitutionally allowed to carry out peaceful protest”.
”Gleaned from the world press conference they granted to itemise their grouse, it is even more justifiable they peacefully protest to draw governments’ attention. We urge the Federal Government (FG) to immediately address their grievances.
“The issue of the dying fishes affected virtually all the coastal towns and their estuaries across Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States. Despite the public outcries from the affected communities, no respite came in the way of these beleaguered people even with the laboratory evidence indicting the multinational oil companies. Are these people not part of Nigeria to deserve the protection of governments?
“Without any justifiable reason, the FG under President Buhari has cancelled the Multi-Billion Dollar Export Processing Zone (EPZ) Gas Revolution Industrial Park Project, Ogidigben and the Deep Sea Port Project, Gbaramatu Kingdom which would have created thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Meanwhile, the same Government has hastily approved the Ajakuta, Kaduna, Kano, etc States’ multi billion naira Gas Project in northern Nigeria. Is the Government of Mohammadu Buhari prosecuting economic war of aggression against the Niger Delta people?
“What is more anoinying is that the Buhari Government allowed itself to used by power brokers in the corridor of power to hijack the Floating Dockyard and cornered it in Lagos when they supposed to deliver it to Okerenkoko in the Gbaramatu Kingdom upon arrival in the Country. This is pure invitation to anarchy. We do not pray for any uprising in the Niger Delta but the FG’s policies are not friendly to the region.” The group said.
Accirding to the group, “Buhari should immediately order NIMASA to deliver the Floating Dockyard to Okerenkoko for the sake of peace and harmony. No one can stand to face such crude injustice in this our contemporary society. We’re all witnesses to the Nigerian Maritime University’s conflagration. Agent provocateurs are it again to infuriate anger in the Niger Delta.
“We’re calling on the National Assembly and concerned Nigerians to prevail on the FG to do the needful in order to avert any likely economic crisis in the oil sector. The concerns of the Gbaramatu people should be addressed immediately.” The statement added.
