Pandemonium yesterday in Warri corner, opposite Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) Warri in Delta state as two vigilante groups exchanged gun fire after a heated argument, leaving three members dead over who to collect security levy from the waterway users.
Daily Watch gathered that trouble started when one group disarmed another group in the river and sent them packing after their patrol engine boat too captured.
The defeated vigilante group mainly Ogbe-Ijo youths regrouped and returned with sophisticated weapons moved to the location of the vintage vigilante group and opened gun fire at their opponents.
Our source said, the vintage group were waiting for them with their weapons, mainly battle axe and cutlasses celebrating their victory, after capturing a fellow vigilante engine boats and other items.
‘‘Unknown to them, the aggrieved Ogbe-Ijo vigilante group opened gunfire on them. Untill the gun sound lasted few minutes on Friday morning, three youths were confirmed dead at the spot while others seriously wounded with bullets’’’ our source said.
Chairman Burutu security outfit and member Delta waters, ex-militant leader, Ambassador Godday Smith confirmed the incidence.
According to him, the DPO A-division Warri was invited to witness the bloody scene and make arrangement to deposit the corpses in mortuary as well as evacuate the wounded ones for treatment.
The Delta State Police PRO DSP Andrew Aniamaka could not be reached for comment as his phone was switched off while filing this report.
