The opening day of 1st Gov. Diri National Wrestling Classics saw Bayelsa Sports Academy, Asoama taking a commanding lead in the U-15 category winning 4 gold and one bronze medals.
In the 38kg Freestyle event, Leigha Doubra of Bayelsa Sports Academy defeated James Perezidei of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) team to land gold, while Tari Timidei (Kano State) and Abdullahi Isah (Bauchi Sate) settled for bronze.
TrustGod Binakama of Bayelsa Sports Academy added another gold in the 44kg weight class, with Kelvin Zige of Team Kano – whom he defeated in the final – settling for silver. Perez Egbe (Bayelsa State) and Taiwo Dele (Ogun State) both won bronze.
However, in the 52kg class, Edo State’s Vasco Timiebiepre overcame Kelvin Welson of Team Delta to land gold, while Perekowei Justice (Bayelsa State) and Ayoola Lekan (Ogun State) both settled for bronze.
In the Greco Roman events, the Asoama Boys also claimed two of the three gold medals available.
Matthias Soba of Bayelsa Sports Academy won gold in the 52kg category at the expense of Team Bauchi’s Opukeme Ebi, while Clever Undonipre (Oyo State) and James Joseph (Nasarawa State) both won bronze.
In a related development, Nicholas Africanus of Bayelsa Sports Academy claimed gold in the 44kg class, with silver going to Solomon Aiyebakereye of Team Bayelsa. Obodo david (Ebonyi State) and Shomoye Emmanuel (Ogun State) both won bronze.
In the 38kg weight class, Adebisi Feranmi of Team Lagos defeated Ayedun Cyrus of Team Ogun in the final to land gold, with the bronze medals going to Millionaire Righteousness (Bayelsa State) and Kelvin Oikan (Bayelsa Sports Academy).
Meanwhile, in Women Wrestling (U-15), Ayayefa Tariladei of Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) won gold in the 33kg category, overcoming Undokakpo Andrew of Team Bayelsa in the final. Bedford Tariladei of Team Delta claimed the bronze medal available.
Weriere Freye of Team Delta defeated Bayelsa’s Kurokeme in the final of the 36kg class to land gold, while Charity Ngure (Nasarawa State) and Egbe Blessing (Ogun State) both claimed bronze.
Finally, Happiness Soso of Joe Oziti Wrestling Club won gold in the 42kg class after overcoming Peculiar Onun of Cross River State. Worinkoritye Andrew (Bayelsa State) and Duke Ezonfade (Delta State) both won bronze.
